When it’s very cold, too cold to snow, the moisture in the air freezes and becomes small shards of floating ice. They arrange themselves in such a way that refracts light coming from the ground, forming cold beams that shoot into the sky.
There are not a new phenomena but I do think about how our modern bright lights that we keep on all night are the only reason I’ve seen them so often.
