So I was in the forest one day, as you do, walking. Just walking. Everything was normal. Beautiful, of course, because the forest is beautiful, but normal. The sun was going in and out of the clouds, which were low to the head because I was up high in the mountain, and colors of the leaves were slightly warming from green to yellow. Fall was creeping down the trees like a spider on it’s thread. My eyes lazily scanned the trees back and forth with no aim, just looking, but then a dark shape stood out to me, maybe 20 yards away. It was the shape of a turtle the size of a four door sedan, it’s head turned slightly up towards the sun.

I’ve never seen a turtle that big. It didn’t notice me, so I didn’t feel threatened by it. And even if I had, how fast could a turtle that size move? Surely not fast at all. Somehow my mind acclimated it into the normalcy of the day and it decided it was as normal as the day had been without consulting me. I was curious, but had no emotion towards it. Maybe turtles did get this big, maybe there are turtles this size in the Hudson Valley? I think I would’ve heard about that, but I don’t know everything and I’m relatively new here.

I decided to get closer. What harm could it do? It hadn’t turned towards me, I didn’t feel scared at all, it was a normal day and all the things in it was normal. I cracked through the underbrush towards the turtle, really not caring to be quiet, and still nothing. Maybe the turtle was dead? Or asleep?

I got even closer and saw that it was a log in the shape of a massive turtle with it’s face towards the sun in the dappled forest floor. It truly was just another normal day… or so I thought.
