Upon yonder mossy stump there resteth a most peculiar gourd. Not of flesh, but finely hewn of ancient wood, with a face most mirthful and strange. Its eyes, carved wide as moons, do twinkle with mischief, and its crooked grin waggeth as though it pondereth some jolly jest. Each All Hallows’ Eve, it doth creak to life, giggling like a fool in the stocks, and bestoweth riddles and root beer to any brave soul who dares tip their hat and bid it good morrow.
